Star Wars Thoughts: Who Are the Kaminoans?

Ever since the meeting between Dexter Jettster and Obi-Wan Kenobi specifically in Attack of the Clones, when the two discussed the mysterious Jango Fett audiences have been captivated by the Kaminoans.

This highly advanced species is staunchly isolationist; we have seen their world, marveled at their exquisite architecture, and even uncovered the monumental secret of their clone army production yet many questions still remain unanswered.

The few surviving fragments of their history vividly illustrate just how far this species had evolved by the time the Clone Wars erupted.

The Kaminoans' early civilization was remarkably humble, until drastic climatic and environmental shifts forced them to accelerate their development in a desperate bid for survival. From the great floods that submerged their planet to the pioneering of cloning technology, delving into these historical fragments proves to be a fascinating endeavor.

How did this virtually obscure species transform into the enigmatic creators of the clone army? Despite their isolationist stance, did they ever venture beyond their home system? And what exactly catalyzed their monumental technological leap?

Kamino’s Ice Age Accelerated the Kaminoans’ Development

Initially, the Kaminoans lived a terrestrial existence though their survival was always inextricably linked to the ocean.

In the distant past, Kamino’s ice age came to an end a seismic shift that completely reshaped the planet’s topography and the Kaminoans’ way of life. The planet’s existing terrain proved powerless against the relentlessly rising sea levels, triggering catastrophic floods.

Kaminoans

To escape this natural disaster, the early Kaminoans first constructed dwellings on high ground; later, they were compelled to rapidly innovate, upgrading these structures into stilt-houses and towering spires. This forced evolution transformed their once-primitive huts fashioned from mere branches and mud into sprawling complexes of colossal, needle-like towers.

Their interior design is particularly unique: the Kaminoans possess the ability to perceive the ultraviolet spectrum. Consequently, the corridors and chambers that appear stark white to the human eye are, in reality, bursting with vibrant colors hues that the human visual system simply cannot detect.

However, in their struggle against the planet’s harsh climate, their creativity extended far beyond the realm of architectural engineering. Through genetic engineering, they preserved the terrestrial flora and fauna that originally inhabited their world, adapting these species to thrive in their new environment.

The Kaminoans also constructed sturdy, enclosed cities capable of withstanding violent storms and tsunamis. Within these cities, they engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry, allowing their civilization to flourish.

Their complete isolation from the rest of the galaxy stemmed not only from their preference for solitude but also from their geographical circumstances; the star system housing Kamino lies beyond the galactic rim, situated within a region known as "Wild Space." This remote location enabled them to keep their cloning research and related operations strictly confidential, affording them ample time to construct an army based on the genetic template of Jango Fett.

A Self-Sufficient Culture

The Kaminoans have long taken immense pride in the fact that they not only survived but evolved into an inventive race, achieving a state of true civilizational prosperity.

Their harsh environment and ceaseless struggle for survival instilled in their culture a singular focus on the "pursuit of perfection," leading them to dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to the study of genetic engineering and cloning technology.

These technologies also enabled them to significantly extend their own lifespans. In the Legends continuity, mention is made of a Kaminoan named Koona Ha, whose genetic makeup was modified to grant her an exceptionally long life an adaptation designed to endure the rigors of prolonged hyperspace travel. She lived for a total of three thousand years.

Kaminoans

Although the Kaminoans took immense pride in their achievements, they maintained strict secrecy regarding them; rumors of their cloning services circulated only in hushed whispers within the galaxy's criminal underworld.

The technological leaps spurred by their harsh climate combined with their cultural ethos of self-sufficiency led the Kaminoans to firmly believe that they could overcome any challenge without the aid of the Republic. They viewed actively seeking external assistance as a path toward colonial subjugation, which would inevitably lead to the destruction of their own culture.

Ultimately, they weathered every adversity on their own, convinced that any intervention by the Republic would only serve to hinder their progress.

However, this conviction did not prevent them from engaging with wealthy clients through their cloning operations. From underworld crime lords to prominent figures such as Sifo-Dyas and Count Dooku, the Kaminoans discreetly provided their services to the galaxy's most influential patrons. Although they consistently maintained a policy of isolation, it was precisely these business dealings that propelled them onto the central stage of the Star Wars universe.

Kaminoans Beyond Kamino

Even in a galactic center of power like Coruscant, spotting a Kaminoan was a rare occurrence.

Once they had created the Republic's Grand Army, the Republic officially recognized Kamino, granting the planet a seat in the Senate. This seat was held by Halle Burtoni a shrewd and steadfast senator who consistently ensured that Kamino derived the maximum benefit from the war.

Following the conclusion of the Clone Wars and the rise of the Empire, the new regime gradually eroded the Kaminoans' influence, ultimately leading to the destruction of both Kamino and its cloning operations.

Kaminoans

Despite the near-total annihilation of their civilization, the Empire retained a select few of Kamino's top scientists to conduct clandestine experiments. In Star Wars: The Bad Batch, we learn that the Kaminoans possessed another cloning facility located off-world a facility established long before the fall of the Republic.

In the second season of The Bad Batch, while investigating a secret Imperial project, the titular squad stumbled upon an abandoned Kaminoan base on the planet Bora Vio. It is said that, after discontinuing the project years earlier, the Kaminoans had left behind the clones they had created there.

The scale of these structures far exceeded that of typical Kaminoan architecture; strictly speaking, they hovered within the planet's gaseous atmosphere, perfectly concealed from outside observation.

In the wake of the Empire's rise, Taun We alongside Kamino's Prime Minister, Lama Su desperately sought to prove their worth to the new regime, going so far as to attempt to seize "Omega" and hand her over to Imperial scientists.

However, their plan to rendezvous with Cad Bane and hand over the girl was thwarted by Fennec Shand. Shand had been hired by Nala Se, who had been striving to protect Omega and prevent her from falling into Imperial hands. Ultimately, Nala Se herself was captured and forced to conduct experiments for the Empire at Mount Tantiss. And so, the story of this race comes to a close. Single-mindedly pursuing perfection, they scaled unimaginable heights yet ultimately, they could never find their place within this imperfect galaxy.

Proud and self-sufficient, the Kaminoans believed they could master their destiny through technology; yet in the end, they themselves became mere tools in the hands of the Sith, ruthlessly destroyed by the very war machine they had helped to forge.

Conclusion

The Kaminoans transformed a world ravaged by climatic catastrophe into a thriving and prosperous civilization; masters of genetic engineering, they forged an army capable of reshaping the history of the galaxy. Yet, despite their extraordinary intellect and unwavering pursuit of perfection, they ultimately fell victim to the very war machine they had created with their own hands. Proud, isolationist, and profoundly innovative, the Kaminoans conquered nature itself but in the final chapter of their story, they could not escape the inherent flaws of the galaxy that surrounded them.
